McGyver'd Gun Part

Post by Twitch on May 3rd 2011, 02:04

Tonight while swapping springs and pistons, I discovered a substantial crack in the plastic sector gear clip inside the gear box for my APS M4 (a plastic part inside a metal gearbox, go figure!)

So I have ordered a new part, but wanted to get the gun operational in the mean time.

Seeing as the sector gear clip is roughly the thickness of a nickel, I took a nickel, drilled two holes into it, and then used a bench grinder to shape my replacement part. I then filed down the edges, and installed it (a perfect fit). I ran about 250 rounds though the gun, took it apart again to make sure the part was holding and not causing any noticeable damage, and everything looked great. Runs just like it did with the original part.

Just thought I would share this with the group...

That certainly is classic McGyver, except for the whole 'I don't use guns' bit of course. Certainly a nice fix, and probably much more durable then the plastic piece.

Very nicely done. Now to make it shoot out to 400' while maintaining a 3" shot group using nothing but bubblegum...
