Packing Tips

Post by Twitch on January 1st 2018, 19:49

When you get to the stage where you're packing, start thinking about your items in transit.

Items which can fit inside of a bin should go there.  Bins are easily stackable, offer resistance from the weather, both on site, and if we have to drive through a storm and your bin is in the bed of a truck.

Inside your bin, placing items inside of a trash bag offers additional protection.  Duct-taping the lid edge on a back can also help keep driving rain out.  - Don't forget to pack a roll of duct tape for your return trip.

The space inside vehicles (trunks, etc) will be VERY limited.  Please only reserve space for items which really need to be inside and aren't readily available to go into a bin (like large soft-sided gun bags).  Do your absolute best to pack what you can in a weather safe manner.

Bring extra trash bags as well.  At BH5, CH and BH7 events we encountered rain on site.  Being able to protect your clothing and other sensitive electronics will help.

If you're worried about your phone on site, a hot beverage bag from an MRE works great and you can still use your touch screen through the bag.

Additionally, when packing your bins, only fill them to 75-80% on the way out.  When you're home in a controlled environment it's much easier to Tetris things in.  Once on site and you re-pack for return it won't fit as neatly.   You will be glad you have the extra space.

If others have packing tips they would like to share, I would encourage you to post them.
