Biodegradable BB's

Biodegradable BB's

Post by Twitch on June 21st 2011, 00:57

Does anyone know the actual time it takes for a BB to biograde?

The reason I ask is March 15th of this year I placed an Airsoft Elite Bio BB, and a regular plastic BB in a cup of water, and left it in sunlight on an east facing window sill. I have had to add water to the cup as it evaporates.

Both the Bio BB and the regular BB are visibly unchanged, and both still measure 5.98mm using a digital caliper.

I would figure after 3 months submerged in water and exposed to sunlight there would be some type of change?

Its a little bothersome that there would be no change after that much time. It makes me question how biodegradable these things are (if at all), and if we are just paying more for the biodegradable label.

Anyone have reliable information?

Who made the BIO BB? I wonder what qualifies a BIO BB as BIO as far as materials and testing?

I read this is the only 100% bio BB on the market

Many things in nature cause things to de grade uv light is definitely 1 of them if you have your bbsitting inside most commercial glass is uv resistant or blocks uv light without the uv penetration biodegrada ble bb's will not degrade. acidity in soil along with uv light and other things cause these to break down I have a airsoft field northeast colorado we only use bio bbes we go thru tons any don't see too many lying around they do fairly quickly degrade. Yeah, I thought about that too, but that window typically stays open, unless it gets hot enough to turn on the AC...

They places we regularly play do have some BB's on the ground, but not a ton, I question how many are getting pushed into the dirt by foot traffic, or covered by dirt from the wind, etc vs. how many are actually degrading.

Its just discouraging to see BB's staying completely intact in those conditions for such a long time.

It definitely depends on the brand, I had some that had a slight bit of moisture in the bag and 1 month later I opened the bag up and they all had turned to clumpy powder (2000+ BBs). I dont remember what brand it was (they were dark green color).

I hear BioShot degrades very quickly. I just bought some .25 bioshot so I can test them.

G&G brand is only 90 percent bio, they have a slight coating around them of plastic or something.

Biodegradable means they degrade in the biosphere. Sunlight and water are contributing factors only insofar as they promote microbial growth. Think composting, sunlight and water speed the process but it requires biological soil. I am unsurprised water and sunlight have done nothing. I actually am impressed considering that BB BAS have holes in them and they are sometimes in sunlight.

Yeah a good test would be to bury them in soil, or lay them on top of grass or something.

I did do a test like this with a Bioval BB and it only took 2 or 3 days to dissolve.

I have some Airsoft Elite .25's, Matrix .25's and Bioval .20 tracers. I will try putting them on top of damp soil outdoors and see how they do.

Re: Biodegradable BB's

So it has been about 6 months, and with the impending snow storm I decided to check the flower pot that the BB's were placed in.

Airsoft Elite Bio's = 3 of 4 show Visible pitting, no cracks or deformation was observer. Calipers measure them at 5.96mm, 5.97mm, 5.95mm, 5.98mm. All were visibly darker than in color.

Matrix non-bio= 4 of 4 show visible pitting, cracking and deformation. Calipers measure them 5.78mm, 5.95mm, 5.86mm, 1 crumbled into multiple pieces while handling.

Bioval .20 Tracer= 2 of 4 had anything visible remaining, upon attempting to pick them up, they fell apart. Both had the consistency of wet flour.

Obviously not a scientific test, but is real life, they were sitting in a flower pot with BB's sitting on top of soil, in an area that is not shaded. It would get wet from rain/snow, of when the lawn started looking dry and I ran the sprinklers.
